A beginners’ course with Taryn Giles
Explore the beauty of watercolours! This introductory course for beginners features instruction on basic colour theory, composition and techniques. Methods covered will include colour mixing, washes, wet-into-wet painting method, dry brushing, and achieving texture (i.e. salt, gouache, spatter etc.) We will also cover several different methods of transferring source images onto the support (freehand drawing, grid method, using a projector).
Students should bring various resource materials including photos, internet pics, magazine cutouts etc. on subject matter that interests them. There will also be some discussion on choosing reference material including what makes good reference material, what should and shouldn’t be used as far as copy rights go.
4 weeks: Thursdays, 7-9pm, Nov. 3-24, 2011 • Cost: $85
Supplies:
Quality watercolour supplies can be purchased at Eastward Sales Limited on Union Street in Saint John, at Michael’s Craft Store or Endeavours art supply store in Fredericton.
Paints: for this introductory course, a beginner set or just a few tubes of primary colours will work well. Be sure to include a middle red (alizarin is a good one), yellow (cadmium yellow middle or similar) and blue (french ultramarine or similar) as well as burnt sienna.
Brushes: a small variety of watercolour brushes is useful.
