Multicultural Film Series
The Saint John Arts Centre and The Saint John Multicultural & Newcomers Resource Centre is thrilled to announce the creation of the Multicultural Film Series in partnership with the Saint John Arts Centre and several cultural associations.
The series will run twice a month and premieres on Feb. 11 with an all-time classic, The Color Purple, in honour of Black History Month. Based on the novel by Alice Walker, this 1985 movie, starring Danny Glover, Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey, was nominated for 11 Academy Awards.
On Feb. 25, the series continues with We Shall Not Be Moved, a 2001 documentary that tells the stories of Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks and other important historical figures. February’s films were selected in conjunction with PRUDE (Pride of Race, Unity, Dignity through Education).
Film screenings will be accompanied by a short introduction beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Saint John Arts Centre (20 Hazen Ave.), with an optional informal discussion to take place after the movie. Admission is free but optional donations will be accepted of a non-perishable food item for local food banks.
